Get Your Free ReportI bet you never thought you’d hear the words “drink wine” and "compliance” in the same sentence... Yet here we are! Compliance is like that Syrah sitting in your cabinet. It’s complex, heavy, and typically not everyone’s favorite. EasyLlama is on a mission to change that.
If you own compliance at your company, you already know the feeling: another training deadline, another policy update, another Slack thread about a new state law nobody's heard of yet. While it's important work, most days it’s also lonely, heavy work. The majority of HR leader we talk to are carrying compliance by themselves, among the millions of other things on their plates.
As I talked to HR, People, and Compliance leaders this year, I kept hearing those same struggles. Owning compliance can feel lonely, isolating, and overwhelming. After dozens of these conversations, I started thinking about how we could bring a send of community to HR professionals without starting "yet another slack group". These conversations made me realize that perhaps the thing that makes this job easier isn't another playbook or webinar, but an hour where HR professionals get to put the job down, meet people who actually get it, and maybe learn something new — glass in hand?
That’s when we decided to launch HR Happy Hour, EasyLlama's ongoing virtual event series for HR, People, and Compliance professionals. Think of it as a mini HR community with recurring virtual events. The event is part guided wine tasting with a trained sommelier, part real talk on the compliance topics keeping you up at night, part live conversation and with an EasyLlama customer doing this work in the real world. Aka good conversation, good company, and good wine, together.
We hosted the very first HR Happy Hour on August 12, and it was a magically experience. We were able to give a group of people who don't normally get to slow down and connect a reason to log off their to-do lists for an hour and enjoy themselves. Now let’s get into why we launched this series, what you can expect at these events, and why you should come to the next one.
Compliance is heavy. This is the un-wine.
Compliance carries real weight. It's dense, it's constantly shifting, and it's easy to feel like you're the only one holding it together — especially if you're the sole HR hire, or the one person on your team who actually reads the new AI regulations so no one else has to.
HR Happy Hour exists to be the counterweight to that. We wanted to create a space where HR professionals could set aside the compliance headache for an hour, taste some delicious wine, and remember that the people doing this work alongside you (even at companies you've never heard of) are dealing with the exact same complications, the same wins, and the same "wait, we have to comply with what now?" moments you are.
Think of it as your regularly scheduled excuse to un-wine.
What actually happens at HR Happy Hour
Each session follows the same easy rhythm: introductions, wine, a real conversation about a compliance topic that matters right now, more wine, an Ask-Me-Anything session with a real leader doing this work day-to-day, more wine, and a close-out toast. A trained sommelier walks the group through each pour so you leave knowing a little more about California wine than you did an hour before. It's virtual, it's casual, and cameras-on is encouraged but never required.
During our first session on August 12, we had a ton of opinions on both compliance and the wine itself. If there’s one thing I personally learned, nothing loosens up a group of compliance professionals faster than a wine opinion!
Our sommelier walked us through the first three pours, a Sauvignon Blanc, a Riesling, and a Chardonnay, while the group traded tasting notes and compared favorites. Turns out, Chardonnay is a famously divisive wine, which set the group up for a perfect segue into a topic that's just as divisive in HR right now: AI adoption and governance.
The group discussed AI's growing impact on HR teams, and specifically how the leaders on the call are building their AI policies right now. One attendee, who works in HR for a government agency, spoke openly about how hard it is to stand up a formal AI plan inside that kind of structure, red tape and all. Another HR leader on the call shared how they built their organization's AI plan by partnering directly with their IT team — a great real-world example of the "HR plus IT" governance model we talk about a lot but don't always see in action. Advice, worries, and a few "oh, we haven't even thought about that yet" moments were shared freely, which is exactly the point.
Then the group got into the Rosé, and the room was unanimous: the rosé won the night. (It was also by far my favorite.)
Then came the part of the event I was most excited for: a live customer spotlight with Sarah MacKay, HR Director at Adams Fairacre Farms. Sarah talked candidly about her experience using EasyLlama, how she's kept training consistent across multiple locations, customizes her training based on employees, and her own approach to building an agile compliance program that can flex as her company grows. As an HR leader in New York, notoriously one of the U.S.’s most complicated states when it comes to compliance, hearing directly from Sarah on how her team tackles training in such a candid manner was appreciated by the group.
From there, we moved into the reds: a mixed red blend, a Pinot Noir, and a Cabernet, three very different pours that gave everyone something to compare notes on. We closed the night with a few lighthearted HR-themed polls and one last glass to toast the group.
The best part wasn't the wine
Don’t get me wrong, the wine was great. And being able to drink wine during work hours? Even better. But what really stuck with me afterward were the conversations and comments that were made. One attendee admitted, laughing, that they’d "been 'tracking' EasyLlama" since 2022. Another told the group they’d loved llamas for years, which is exactly the kind of unprompted brand crush a marketer dreams about but can never manufacture. After we closed out, people asked to stay connected: to trade LinkedIn profiles, to keep the conversation going, one group even floated the idea of an informal trip to Vegas together (we’ll have to see about that!).
I knew people would enjoy the wine, but I didn't know how badly people wanted to keep talking to each other once the cameras turned off. It truly goes to show that HR and compliance can be an isolating seat at the table. For one evening, it wasn't.
This isn't a one-time thing. Come pour one with us.
HR Happy Hour isn't a one-off; it's a running series, and every HR, People, Compliance, and L&D leader is invited, whether you're exploring EasyLlama or just someone who wants an hour that isn't about deadlines and mandates. Come taste some California wine, learn from a trained sommelier, pick up something you can actually bring back to your team, and meet people going through the same compliance journey you are.
Compliance will still be there tomorrow. For one hour, let's raise a glass instead.
Want in on the next one? Save your seat at the next HR Happy Hour and come find out which wine wins this round.
