Every August, National Relaxation Day shows up with the same well-meaning advice: take a walk, silence your phone, breathe. I do like the reminder, but I also think it misses the bigger question for those of us who build workplaces for a living: why do people need a designated day to feel okay in the first place?

In my seat as Head of People, relaxation isn't something I can hand employees once a year and call it done. I really wish it were that easy. What I've learned is that it has to be built into how people actually work and also over time, into your workplace culture. One of the most overlooked ways to do that is through training.

That might sound like a stretch, I get it. Training and relaxation don't usually share a sentence, but think about where workplace stress actually comes from day-to-day. Stress rarely comes from big, dramatic events. Usually it comes from a manager who doesn't know how to open a hard conversation, so it festers for three more weeks. Or the employee who's never been taught how to push back on an unreasonable deadline, so they just absorb it. Or perhaps the team lead who freezes during conflict instead of resolving it, so the tension spreads to everyone nearby.

None of that gets fixed by a long weekend (although everyone does need a long weekend of R&R here and there). It gets fixed by giving people the skills to handle the moment in front of them.

What is National Relaxation Day?

National Relaxation Day is celebrated annually on August 15th to encourage people to slow down, reduce stress, improve mental health, and take a break from work or chores. It was created in 1985 by then-nine-year-old Sean Moeller of Michigan.

It tends to be an overlooked day, which is why I thought it was important to remind everyone of its importance and talk about how we can tackle it via practical ways in the workplace.

Skill-building is stress prevention, not a nice extra

When someone knows how to have a hard conversation instead of dreading it, that dread stops taking up space in their week. When a manager has an actual framework for resolving conflict, they're not carrying it home. When employees can manage their own time and speak up clearly, a huge share of the low-grade anxiety that builds up in a workday just doesn't happen.

That's the version of relaxation I care about most: not a single day off, but fewer daily reasons to feel wound up in the first place. Give people real tools, and calm stops being something they have to chase after hours. It becomes part of how the job feels.

What skill-based training to prevent stress looks like in practice

You don't need to offer a million training courses, because, who has time for that. But having soft skills as an optional, available resource not only teaches your employees valuable skills, but helps create a better work environment over time. Which is exactly why to celebrate National Relaxation Day, perhaps it's time to consider expanding the soft skills training at your organization.

A day off is a start. Skills are what make it last.

Take National Relaxation Day seriously this year. Leaders after all, are supposed to set the example for employees. Log off, take a walk, silence your phone. But if you lead a People team, an L&D function, or a company, the bigger opportunity is the other 364 days. Get a free preview of any of EasyLlama's soft skill courses in our course library. Every course above is a chance to remove a little friction from someone's week before it turns into stress they carry home.

That's the kind of relaxation we should all want to build.
