Corruption Defined
Corruption is a broad term with a variety of meanings throughout the world. In fact, no international legal definition of corruption exists. Merriam-Webster defines corruption as: dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people.
What is Corruption?
Each year Transparency International ranks 180 countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sectors are perceived to be. This is known as the Corruption Perceptions Index or CPI.
According to Transparency International, despite multiple commitments, 131 countries had made no significant progress against corruption in the last decade. Two-thirds of countries scored below 50, indicating that they have serious corruption problems, and only 27 countries were at their lowest score ever.
Coming in as the most corrupt country in the world was South Sudan with a score of 11 followed by Syria and Somalia each with a score of 13. Can you guess the global average on the CPI index for 2021? The global average remained unchanged from the previous nine years and came in with a score of 43.
A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). In 2021, Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand each were ranked as the least corrupt with a high score of 88. The U.K. Scored 78 and the U.S. scored 67.
